Kids have an incredible gift that most adults don't. It’s the gift of pure and simple joy. My kids have tons of toys, yet they'll spend hours using their imaginations playing with a big cardboard box! They’ve made it into a bus, a rocket, a boat, a flower shop, a grocery store, and even a time machine!
The Bible teaches us that we’re to mature in our relationship with Christ (Ephesians 4:13). The way many Christians live teaches the world that “maturing” in faith means we settle into and accept stale, stuffy, and dry religion. In doing so, we give people the false impression that superficial religion, mysterious rituals, and lofty ceremonies are the goal and fullness of Christianity. That's not maturing at all. That's simply abandoning the joy and love we had at first (Revelation 2:4) for the emptiness of the world.
When King Jesus walked, the earth the Pharisees were the experts and professionals of ugly, twisted, old, dry, stuffy, and cold religion. When Jesus called them “hypocrites,” it wasn’t to embarrass or shame them. It was to wake them up and draw them out of worthless religion into a real life-giving relationship with Him- The Eternal Son, The Creator, Savior, and King of All!
It wasn’t long before King Jesus’ disciples started acting like the stuffy old religious Pharisees. In Luke 18:15 we read they were even sending children away, like grumpy old fuddy-duddies, and King Jesus wasn’t happy about it!
King Jesus said to them, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not stop them, because the Kingdom of God belongs to ones such as these. Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it.”
King Jesus didn’t create the entire cosmos, the Earth, the Sun, moon, and stars, and all the wonders of nature so we could engage in stuffy, dry, and dead old religion. King Jesus didn’t step down from heaven and die on The Cross to rescue us from our sin so we could recite mindless prayers as penance for our sins. He didn't send us The Holy Spirit so we could engage in endless, boring, routine ceremonies and rituals like religious zombies.
Maturing in faith absolutely doesn’t mean the joy and love we had at first needs to dry up and die. Quite the opposite is true! If we truly have been born again (see John 3:1-8), truly have been blessed with the gift of faith in Christ (see Ephesians 2:4-10), then our joy, love, and devotion for King Jesus never stop!
If your love for King Jesus has become routine, dull, dry, old, and stuffy, there's one thing that's certain: His love for you has yet to wane. What King Jesus desires is exactly what He said, that we'd come to Him like little children.
When little kids are broken and hurting, they're not worried about what others think. They simply cry out for help to the ones they trust and love. Cry out to Him in honesty and brokenness, and what King Jesus promises you’ll discover is either the legitimate love you had at first or the love He always intended you to have.
