It’s popular today for even so-called “experts” to whip up high-sounding new-age philosophy and tell us, “It’s not important what others say. The only voice that matters is your own.” There are numerous problems with those kinds of statements.
First, we’d have to be willing to listen to others telling us we shouldn’t listen to others... That’s a genuine head-scratcher.
Next, if we truly reject all external counsel and input, then, by definition, we’d be fools bent on folly. That path leads only to pain, destruction, and death, and that’s pretty dark.
Lastly, there are special places for people who only listen to their own voices and reject all outside counsel. They're called prisons and mental institutions.
What new age counselors, therapists, and philosophers fail to tell us about is a THIRD option. Since the human heart truly is deceitful above all things (Jeremiah 17:9)... since there’s a way that seems right to us that only leads to death (Proverbs 14:12)... since our default setting is to do whatever we see fit in our own eyes (Judges 21:25)... and since King Jesus' judgment is that we all loved the darkness rather than the Light because our deeds were evil... it’s no wonder or mystery that our world is a total mess.
Pessimists and curmudgeons stop there, but The Good News is: "Jesus is King!" We have a Creator, Redeemer, and Counselor who wired us to perceive and receive His gloriously life-giving counsel! We certainly can choose to reject His gift of life. We certainly can choose to remain in the darkness of our sin-prison. We certainly can elect to stay in the oppressive bondage of sin that steals, kills, and destroys. But The Cross of Christ lets us know that doesn't have to be how our story ends.
Since King Jesus' UNSTOPPABLE love for us is gloriously revealed through His incarnation that first Christmas morning…
Since He willingly gave Himself up for us at The Cross as the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world…
And since He promised to return and make everything right forever, it behooves us to listen and follow His truth, counsel, and wisdom revealed in and as The Word.
What words will you listen to today? Will they be the harsh, panicked, and desperate words of a lost and broken world grasping for illusions and vapor? Will they be the words of a broken and hurting inner self that rejects all outside counsel and correction? Or will they be words of life and light from The Light of The World, King Jesus?
If you’re struggling with anxiety, depression, hopeless thoughts, and questions of self-worth today, know this: “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” That means King Jesus died for you.
You‘ve never been, nor will you ever be, more lovable or more valuable to Christ than you are right now. Your immense and immeasurable value can only begin to be grasped by the height, width, breadth, and bottomless depths of His UNSTOPPABLE love. If you're going to listen to anything today, listen to His glorious voice, which sings, “Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest!”
