Restoration

Restoration:

Today I spent a few hours helping with disaster relief in the nearby town of Sunnyvale, TX. Back on December 26 eleven tornadoes ripped through the DFW area.

Several local churches teamed up to help out in Sunnyvale where a tornado tore through an RV park and part of a neighborhood. Thankfully no one was killed in that area, but the devastation was massive.

I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I surely was not expecting what I saw. Huge RV’s were overturned, ripped apart, tossed 100’s of meters from where they were parked… Propane tanks exploded leaving nothing but charred debris… the whole thing looked like a war zone.

The RV park was almost completely abandoned apart from relief works and emergency support. As we sifted through debris and sorted it in piles (wood, metal, personal items, etc.) it left me wondering:

“How many of these people who survived would take full advantage of God’s mercy?”

How many of these folks would recognize the fact that their life was just one explosion, one stray piece of metal, or one downed power line away from death? How many would see the hand of God and His patient love in the midst of this tragedy?

The most profound and impactful decisions we make in life frequently come at times of extreme emotional duress. So I’d like to ask you to join me in praying that God would use the tragedy and devastation from the events of December 26, and the inevitable tragedies – both natural and synthetic – coming in 2016, to reveal the frailty of life and our need for restoration; a need that only Jesus can satisfy.

“Restore us, Yahweh, the God of Hosts; look on us with favor, and we will be saved.”
 -Psalm 80:19

Blessings,
