OUT OF POVERTY

As Jesus looked up, he saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury. He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins. “Truly I tell you,” he said, “this poor widow has put in more than all the others. All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.”
-Luke 21:1-4

Just before the Last Supper, Judas’ betrayal, and Jesus’ arrest and crucifixion, we read about a poor widow giving “all she had to live on” to the Lord.

This Easter, many will go through the motions of washing the car, getting dressed up, going to a church service, and maybe even dropping something in the offering; but, in light of what Jesus did through the Cross, how many will “put in all?”

The power of Paul’s New Testament letters (Roman, Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, etc.) is their integrity, i.e. the direct correlation between what Paul said and what he did. Like the poor widow, Paul gave gifts to the Lord out of poverty and “put in all.”

This year, our celebration of Easter can be just another day filled with pastel colors, baskets lined with fake grass, plastic eggs, chocolate bunnies, and convenient religion flowing out of our abundance, or we can truly worship in the only way pleasing and acceptable to Him who gave it all for us - out of poverty.

Blessings,
