Hidden Treasure: II
Jesus said it like this: “The
kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he
hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that
field.”
Sold all he had, and bought that
field.
Why? He sold everything and bought
the field where the treasure is because there is nothing more important. Not your job, your health, your kids, your
parents, your new car, your hair, your house, your workout, your business, your
clients, your promotion, your social life, your charity fundraiser, your
vacation, your ‘unique’ situation… NOTHING.
We think the treasure is in
possessing a ‘thing,’ but God says it’s in the hunt, i.e. identification and
involvement with the activity – the mission.
We think that because we’re ‘saved’ we’ve arrived. We stop searching,
stop digging, stop pursuing, stop going.
An attitude of ‘arrival’ causes us to stop. When the guy in Jesus’ parable sold all he
had and bought the field – the adventure had just begun. We, on the other hand, don’t sell anything.
We don’t buy the field. We don’t dig. We just sit there kicking back in our
comfy chair, coffee and donut in hand, consume – and consume some more – then tell
people, “Oh yeah, it’s over there. It’s awesome. You should check it out.”
The lost look at our pathetic coffee
& donut stained ‘Christian’ lives and think, “Riiiiight, YOU know where
this treasure is buried? Is that why you’re a muck-farmer covered in filth like
me? Ummhmmm. Gotcha.” Meanwhile, we have
the audacity to wonder why none of our friends, co-workers, or family members has
ever converted to Christianity through our testimony.
PSSSSST… Donut-boy, they’re lost –
not stupid. They don’t believe you.
Look for it as for silver.
Search for it like hidden treasure.
Sold all he had, and bought the
field.
So let’s start with reading 1 Samuel
1:1-11.
Not metaphor or hyperbole.
I really want you to read 1 Samuel
1:1-11.

Treasure: PART III
